Halloween Party

The Halloween Party this year was held by the High School Student Council. We refined the Haunted House from last year, and changed it into a Room Escape. Moreover, there was a Halloween dance with assistance from the PTSA. As a council, we put a lot of time and effort into constructing a practical yet fun Room Escape, and adding more excitement to differ the dance party between this year and last year. As for myself, I had to learn how to deal with a lot of people for a long time, overcoming tiredness, and most of all balance my time between Student Council and school work.

The entire process of planning, organizing, and buying supplies took around one full month. In addition, members from the student council stayed after school the week prior to the Halloween Party to set up and run a test trial. Although setting up took around three hours, the result was very pleasing. In general, everything worked pretty well and we know what had to be improved. I was very thankful for everyone that helped out because the Party could not have happened without them. During the process of planning and organizing, I was mentally and physically very tired because this was a big event, and I had to make sure I finish all my homework as well. From this experience, I learned the importance of collaborative work, I want to thank especially Steven because he was the main person in charge of Room Escape. At time when I felt very tired, it was great having people to help me out. This activity was definitely something that required long-term commitment, we all had to keep going in order to make sure the Room Escape happens successfully.

During the day of the Party, a lot of students signed up for Room Escape. Then, we ran into our first problem, which is not having enough time for half of the groups to go in Room Escape. When this problem occurred, some people from the council got really frustrated (including myself) because students were complaining about that fact that they cannot go. To deal with this problem, I just told other members that everyone had a fair chance of going since it was up to them when they will signup; thus, we do not need to blame ourselves entirely. However, the reason for not having enough time is also because of some disorganization. Therefore, we should plan the time for each round of Room Escape and cleanup time more precisely to make the event more well-rounded. Undertaking the challenge of dealing with angry and frustrated students and student council member was very helpful for me. Usually I am easily angered, and would want to argue until people agree with me. Nonetheless, this experience made me learn that the best way to calm people down is to be calm myself.
